ACCRS: Demonstrate command of the conventions of English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details and event sequences.

 

Weekly Outcome: I can write a narrative piece, establish purpose and audience, understand story elements. Integrate appropriate grammar and mechanics. Demonstrate clarity and organization, enhance vocabulary.

 

Resources: Fiction and nonfiction articles, Language textbook, graphic organizer, ARMT Coach, Notebooks, Ladders to Success.

 

Before

 

Purpose: Establish   a purpose for Reading.                                        

 

Strategy: Graphic   Organizers (Story Map, Summarization Chart)

 

Procedure: TTW   assess student’s background knowledge of Narrative Writing using a Graphic   Organizer.

 

Vocabulary (Word Parts and synonyms).

 

 

During

 

Purpose: Engage   with Text.

 

Strategy: Turn   and Talk, Scanning and Skimming.

 

Procedure: TTW   introduce Literary text with focus on sequence of events.

 

TTW and TSW use Graphic Organizer to model identifying sequence   in order, Practice scanning and skimming.

 

TSW practice using a blog. Complete the graphic organizer.

After

 

Purpose: Reflect   on Content of Lesson.

 

Strategy: Summarize   Sequence of Events.

 

Procedure: TSW   use post it notes to identify Literary Elements in a passage.

 

TSW tell the main or most important events or ideas.

 

TSW restate in their own words.

 

TSW write a Narrative Essay

Procedure: TTW pass out pictures of various people. TSW turn and talk creating questions and conversations about the pictures.

Procedure: TTW will read the “I Am Not A Nerd Letter”. TSW code the text using the highlighting strategies.

Procedure: TTW show illustrations of various events. TSW will mark agree or disagree with the actions in the pictures.

Procedure: TSW make notes, questions and/or comments in the margins.

TTW read information from nonfiction material on The Civil Rights Movement and model note taking in the margins.

After

 

Purpose: Reflect on the Content of the Lesson

 

Strategy: Quick Write

 

Procedure: TTW list relevant questions regarding conflict, segregation or equal rights. TTW share responses with partner, group and class.

TSW write opinion piece using evidence and facts from reading.

Purpose: Reflect on content lesson

 

Strategy: Margin Notes and Journal Responses

 

Procedure: TTW read aloud additional information from book.

TSW structure and complete information and use evidence to write a summary.

Procedure: TTW introduce use of Commentary Box for opinion writing.

 

TTW and TSW use G/O to do model lesson (example) using the overhead.

 

TTW introduce the terms used “Concrete Detail and Commentary” and relate to opinion and evidence in their writing.

Strategy: Margin Notes (Use Post-it Notes for important Info)

 

Procedure:

TSW review margin notes and use notes to write down their opinion or insight.

 

TSW pick their concrete details or facts from text (article).

 

TSW write an opinion piece using opinions and evidence.

 

TSW write an Essay based on his/her learning experiences in the D.A.R.E. program.

Procedure: TTW read aloud the “True Story of the 3 Pigs”

TSW compare & contrast this story with the original story of the “3 Little Pigs”

TSW turn and talk identifying key

characters and events

TTW appoint two teams (A &B)to

serve as lawyers for the pigs or

the wolf who will defend their claim of guilty or not guilty

Strategy: Talk to the text to determine the author’s point of view

 

Procedure: TTW reread some lines from book and model finding evidence.

TSW work with a partner on his team to write down key points of evidence that support their point of view (opinion) while defending either the pigs or wolf

Purpose: Activate prior knowledge using examples of the value of money.

 

Strategy: TTW review decimal system place value chart.

 

Procedure: TSW brainstorm in groups the answer to the question “When in everyday life do you use decimals?” Share answers with whole class.

 

 

During

 

Purpose: Use manipulatives to practice and demonstrate with partner.

 

Strategy: TTW use Guided Practice to model with student the game “Reading and Matching Decimals.”

 

Procedure: TSW generate questions to clarify understanding of instructions.

TSW practice with group using games manipulatives and write answers on graphic organizer.
