The students will read for information about how athletes use knowledge about the body to train. COS-6.00, ELA 10.00

Activities

Complete a KWL chart on muscles.

 

Read the story “Muscles”.

 

Discuss vocabulary words (tissue, muscle, contract, tendon)

 

Complete comprehension questions.

Review jumping rope

 

Discuss moving bones

 

Review the role of muscles

 

Students will construct a model leg by using dowels, rubber bands, and rubber tubes.

Review the leg model.

 

Introduce ligaments

 

Students will construct a model thumb by craft sticks, rubber tubes, string, and twist ties.

Review leg and thumb models.

 

Read and discuss the story “The Frozen Man”

 

Students will construct a model arm by using dowels, rubber bands, rubber tubes and paper clips.

Ask students what kinds of activities can be improved by thoughtful practice.

 

Read and discuss the article “Smart Training”
